Dr. Ernesto Macaro

Biography

Ernesto Macaro is an Emeritus Professor at the Department of Education, University of Oxford, and a Senior Research Fellow at Worcester College. His expertise lies in Applied Linguistics, with a significant focus on teacher education and language policy. Macaro has 16 years of experience as a language teacher in secondary schools in the UK and has contributed to the professional development of language teachers through his work with Warwickshire Education Authority. He completed his MA in Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick and later obtained a PhD while teaching on the university's PGCE course. Since joining the Department of Education at Oxford in 1999, he has introduced courses in Applied Linguistics and has led various research projects, particularly in the realm of English Medium Instruction (EMI). His published works, including a landmark 2018 book by Oxford University Press, establish him as a leading expert in this field. Macaro is actively involved in research projects that explore the collaboration between English language specialists and academic subject specialists in non-native contexts, the certification of teaching competence for EMI teachers, and the challenges faced by students in transitional educational settings. He regularly shares his findings through keynotes, plenary lectures, and workshops globally.
