Biography

Dr. F. Weber's main research interests focus on understanding the neural homeostatic mechanisms that control wakefulness and sleep, particularly emphasizing REM sleep, a stage associated with vivid dreaming. This brain state offers a unique neurophysiological and neurochemical environment, significantly influencing the status of neural circuits and single neurons. Currently, the lab's projects concentrate on exploring brain-wide circuits that regulate brain states and their roles in memory and learning. The lab adopts an interdisciplinary approach that combines optogenetics, high-density in vivo electrophysiology with Neuropixels, calcium imaging, behavioral assays, and computational modeling to study these complex phenomena. The lab is part of the newly established Chronobiology and Sleep Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, which provides a unique environment for the interdisciplinary study of sleep across multiple model organisms to better understand health and disease.
