Dr. Fiona Devine

Biography

Fiona Devine is Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Professor of Sociology at The University of Manchester, where she has been a faculty member since 1994. She previously served as Head of Sociology, Head of the School of Social Sciences, and Head of the Alliance Manchester Business School. Her research focuses on social stratification and mobility, with a comparative emphasis on work, employment, and political participation. Devine has received funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Leverhulme Trust, and has been heavily involved in the BBC’s Great British Class Survey, which represents one of the largest studies of class in Great Britain. Additionally, she has held numerous prestigious positions, including membership in the ESRC and the European Science Foundation, as well as visiting positions at various renowned institutions globally. Fiona has been recognized with awards such as OBE and CBE for her services to social sciences, and has made significant contributions to various media discussions regarding social class and stratification. Her current projects and ongoing research activities continue to address critical societal issues.
