Biography

Francesco Mondada received his M.Sc. in micro-engineering in 1991 and a Doctoral degree in 1997 from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He co-founded K-Team, a company focused on mobile robotics, and served as its CEO for five years, during which he was a key developer of the Khepera robot, a benchmark in bio-inspired robotics which is extensively used in over 1,000 research institutions globally. Since 2000, he has engaged in significant research at CALTECH and was involved in the EU's SWARM-BOTS project. He has authored more than 100 research papers in bio-inspired robotics and robotic system design and co-edited conference proceedings. Major accolades include the "Crédit Suisse Award for Teaching" from EPFL in 2011 and the "Polysphère" award in 2012 for his contributions to the School of Engineering. Mondada's research interests focus on mechatronic solutions and robotics for education, engaging students with interactive robotics platforms. He leads the MOBOTS group at EPFL, where he applies his expertise to address challenges in robotic design and development.
