Dr. Fred Weerman

Biography

Fred Weerman is a distinguished professor of Dutch Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam, where he has been serving since 2001. He completed his education in Dutch Language and Literature as well as General Linguistics at Utrecht University, earning his doctorate in 1989. Weerman's career commenced at Utrecht University as an assistant professor in 1988, progressing to associate professor in 1989. He has held prestigious positions such as visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Australian National University. He was a fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in 2011 and served as the dean of the Faculty of Humanities from 2016 to 2022. As a researcher, Weerman focuses on language acquisition, specifically the roles of functional elements such as verbal inflection and grammatical gender across various types of language acquisition and variation. He has directed numerous projects funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), contributing significantly to the fields surrounding bilingualism and specific language impairments. His editorial roles include being an editor for the Tijdschrift voor Nederlandse Taal- en Letterkunde and serving on various boards and committees related to language studies.
