Gillian Howard enjoys a varied career on both modern and period instruments, performing as an oboist and English horn player in various ensembles including the Windsor Symphony, Hamilton Philharmonic, Sinfonia Toronto, Kingston Symphony, Esprit Orchestra, and Toronto Mozart Players. She has appeared at the Elora Festival and participated in chamber music projects, recording, arranging, and performing both new and traditional music as part of a wind quintet. As a Baroque oboist, she has performed with groups such as Tafelmusik, the Aradia Ensemble, and Theatre Early Music. Gillian holds Masters degrees in Performance and Musicology from the University of Toronto. She teaches oboe at York University and instructs on oboe pedagogy at the University of Toronto, leveraging her extensive experience which includes teaching beginner to advanced oboists for over twenty years through arts programs with the Toronto District School Board. Additionally, she serves as the Principal Oboe for the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra since 2010, and has contributed to their acclaimed recordings of new works by Canadian composers. Gillian also enjoys singing sacred music from various traditions as part of Schola Magdalena.
