Gözde Demirer was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey. She received her B.S. in Chemical Biological Engineering from Koc University in 2015 and completed her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at UC Berkeley under the supervision of Prof. Markita Landry in 2020. During her Ph.D. studies, she developed nanotechnologies for plant genetic engineering. Following her doctoral work, Gözde joined Prof. Siobhan Brady's lab at UC Davis, where she focused on studies related to nutrient use efficiency in tomatoes and developed high-throughput functional genomics tools to study transcriptional regulation in crops. She is now an Assistant Professor in the Division of Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology, where her lab will concentrate on bioengineering plants aimed at enhancing food security, sustainability, and environmental remediation using novel nanotechnology and synthetic biology approaches.
