Biography

Dr. Gregory P. Thomas is a professor at the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Education, specializing in science education and metacognition. He completed his Bachelor of Education at James Cook University in 1987 and received his PhD in 1999 from Queensland University of Technology, working under the supervision of Professor Cam McRobbie. He has previously held the position of Head of the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Social Science Technology at the Hong Kong Institute of Education and has served as Chair of the Department of Secondary Education at the University of Alberta. His research predominantly focuses on the application of learning theories in science education, particularly how metacognition influences teaching and learning processes. His work includes conceptualizing and evaluating learning environments through multiple psychosocial perspectives and aims to help classroom teachers develop strategies to enhance students' metacognitive skills. Dr. Thomas has received several awards for his contributions to education, including the National Excellence Teaching Award in Australia and was a recipient of the Larry Beauchamp Senior Researcher Award at the University of Alberta.
