Biography

Originally from Pengosekan, Bali, Gusti Komin Darta is a leading composer, performer, and teacher of Balinese music. He began performing professionally at the age of 9 in shadow puppet plays (wayang), influenced by his father, the renowned musician Gusti Ketut Kerta. A founding member of the virtuosic Balinese gamelan Çudamani, he has toured extensively throughout Europe, Japan, and the United States. For the past 25 years, he has taught various instruments such as gendér, wayang, reyong, and kendang to both local and foreign students in his hometown of Pengosekan, Bali, as well as teaching overseas. Currently, Gusti Komin is recognized as a sought-after composer, performer, and educator, performing and teaching widely across the eastern United States, including at prestigious institutions and community-based groups like the Gamelan Galak Tika in Boston and Gamelan Dharma Swara in NYC. He is known as a master of gendér wayang and a contemporary composer who blends traditional and modern gamelan music in imaginative ways, demonstrating a rebellious spirit in his compositions that push the boundaries of musical conventions and engage the strongest performers.
