Biography

Heather M. Brown is an associate professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta, specializing in research related to neurodivergent students. Her work focuses on understanding and supporting neurodivergent individuals, including those diagnosed with autism, and exploring methods to enhance academic achievement and well-being. She leads AIDAN Lab projects that collaborate with neurodivergent and neurotypical students to develop effective strategies for academic success and life enhancement for autistic children, youth, and adults. Dr. Brown earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Waterloo in 2001 and an Ontario Teaching Certificate in 2005. She achieved a Master’s degree and a PhD in Health Rehabilitation Sciences, with a concentration in Speech-Language Sciences, at Western University between 2009 and 2013. Following her doctoral studies, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Western University before joining the University of Alberta as an assistant professor in 2014 and advancing to her current role. Throughout her career, Dr. Brown has contributed to significant research projects, securing over $1.5 million in grants, and has published extensively in the field, including works related to autism, neurodiversity, and educational practices.
