Heather McCune Bruhn is an Associate Teaching Professor of Art History with a specialization in Western Medieval Art and Architecture. She began her academic career intending to become a painter and earned her undergraduate degrees in Art History and Silkscreen Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed her MA and PhD in Art History at Pennsylvania State University, focusing on late Medieval goldsmithwork in Germany, an interest sparked by her research as a Fulbright grantee in Cologne, Germany. Her research explores the artistic techniques, meanings, and functions of artwork within the broader historical and cultural context. Recent publications have addressed the sources and documents related to late Medieval goldsmithwork and the commissioning processes for lower-cost monstrances in the Rhineland. As a part of her pedagogical contributions, Dr. Bruhn has developed several online courses through Penn State’s College of Arts and Architecture. She received the Atherton Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2022, nominated by her students. In addition to teaching online courses, she regularly conducts in-person classes in Medieval art and architecture, engaging students in both lecture and seminar formats.
