Biography

Hector Geffner holds a PhD from UCLA obtained in 1989 and has worked as a Staff Research Member at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in New York, USA. He was a researcher at ICREA and a professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona until December 2022. In addition to his roles in academia, he serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research and is a Fellow of AAAI and EurAI. Geffner authored books such as 'Default Reasoning: Causal Conditional Theories' published by MIT Press in 1992 and 'Concise Introduction Models Methods Automated Planning' with Blai Bonet in 2013. He has edited volumes focusing on Heuristics, Probability, and Causality. His research interests include computational models in reasoning, action, learning, and planning in general. As a concerned citizen, he also teaches courses on the social impacts of technological change. He leads a project on representation learning for acting and planning funded by an advanced ERC grant, along with his role heading the Chair of Machine Learning and Reasoning at RWTH Aachen University, where he continues to explore effective methods in artificial intelligence research.
