Helen Dromey is a Principal Teaching Fellow in Music Education Enterprise at the University of Southampton and serves as the Associate Director of the Centre for Music Education Social Justice. She primarily teaches in the Education pathway of the MMus Music degree programme. Her research focuses on how instrumental teaching can be adapted to improve pupil engagement, often collaborating with music hubs and charities to support inclusive pedagogies. With substantial experience teaching violin and viola in various settings, including individual, small-group, and whole-class ensemble tuition, Helen has also worked as a qualified primary school teacher and Music Coordinator, where she delivered music education for Key Stages 1–2. In addition, she holds the position of Course Leader for the European String Teachers Association's PG Cert and provides observation consultancy for UK Music Masters teachers, contributing resources to ABRSM’s Teacher Hub. She is dedicated to facilitating the development of teachers and continues to teach violin and viola. Helen earned her PhD from the University of York in 2024, with her thesis examining results from an action research project designed to assist post-WCET learners through a new pedagogical approach termed 'Be musician' (BeAM). Her academic qualifications include a BMus in Music and an MMus in Historical Musicology from King’s College, London, alongside a PGCE from the University of Chichester and LRAM from the Royal Academy of Music.
