Professor Dr. Helena Löthman

Biography

Helena Löthman is a Lecturer at Uppsala University specializing in Chinese language education. Since 1992, she has taught a variety of courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, primarily focused on language instruction, including text reading and pronunciation exercises. Löthman emphasizes a pedagogical approach that encourages joy and enthusiasm in learning, tailoring her methods to accommodate individual student needs. Her mentoring work aims to support new teachers by sharing experiences and teaching strategies. Research interests include the socio-economic situations of Chinese women in the labor market, examining conditions faced by migrant workers and the roles of Chinese NGOs. She is currently working on her doctoral thesis titled 'Job - Independence? Women's Labor Market in Beijing and Tianjin', which explores how Chinese women in major cities adapt to unemployment following layoffs from state-owned enterprises and their subsequent quest for new employment opportunities.
