Biography

Herb Payung serves as the Assistant Director of Bands at the Mead Witter School of Music. He has a rich background in music education, beginning his career in eastern Pennsylvania where he taught instrumental music. Over six years in public education, Payung conducted high school concert bands, jazz ensembles, pit orchestras, and marching bands, as well as teaching courses in instrumental music and jazz improvisation. He also served as the elementary band director and as a brass and percussion instructor at the middle school level. Payung holds multiple degrees in music: a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music in Wind Conducting from Penn State University, a Master of Music in Music Education from Boston University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His primary conducting teachers include Scott Teeple and Dennis Glocke. Payung is an active member of several professional organizations, including the College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, National Association for Music Education, American Federation of Musicians, and Pi Kappa Lambda, a music honor society.
