Dr. Hilary Pilkington

Biography

Hilary Pilkington is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Manchester and a Fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences. Her research predominantly focuses on youth, cultural practices, and post-socialist societies, utilizing qualitative methods, especially ethnographic research. She has coordinated significant projects, including the H2020 PROMISE project, which addresses youth involvement and social challenges in Europe, and the H2020 Dialogue Radicalisation Equality project. Pilkington's work has critically examined themes of radicalization, focusing on youth engagement with extremist movements in Europe. Her findings have contributed to the development of counter-extremism policies informed by community practices. Previously, she held positions at the University of Birmingham and the University of Warwick, where she directed research exploring youth participation, activism, and the dynamics of extremism in the UK. Her published works include edited volumes and studies that explore young people's journeys in radicalizing contexts, contributing significantly to understanding the intersection of youth culture and social issues in contemporary society.
