Dr. Ian Mccarthy

Biography

W.J. VanDusen Professor of Innovation Operations Management at Simon Fraser University, Ian McCarthy has a rich background combining academia and industry. Before joining SFU, he was a Reader at the University of Warwick, England, where he led the Organizational Systems Strategy Unit. His educational credentials include a B.Eng, M.Sc., and Ph.D. focused on operations strategy from the University of Sheffield. Over his career, Ian has developed a deep expertise in operations management and change innovation management. His research investigates the interplay between operations management and creativity in consumer interactions, the complexities of new product development processes, and the licensing determinants of technology patents. His work is recognized for addressing practical concerns in firms utilizing innovative management practices, including gamification and achieving operational excellence in the era of big data. Ian is an advocate for academic integrity and is known for his insights into the implications of generative AI in business contexts. He actively engages with Ph.D. students passionate about related research and has been published extensively in numerous reputable journals across his field, providing valuable contributions to the literature on operations management and strategic change.
