Biography

Ian Thompson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Education at St Hugh's College, University of Oxford. He currently serves as the interim Director of the Rees Centre, focusing on producing research evidence aimed at improving children’s social care education. Ian leads the Pedagogy, Learning and Knowledge research theme and convenes the Oxford Sociocultural Activity Theory research group. His primary research interests include understanding various aspects of school inclusion and exclusion, as well as the unintended outcomes of policy and practice affecting marginalized young people and children. Additionally, Ian is the lead editor of the journal Teaching and Education and serves on the editorial board of Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties. As a principal co-investigator of multiple research projects, he currently leads the Picture Robson Orr Visual Literacy Research Initiative and is also the education lead for the BrainWaves project. His externally funded projects include 'Excluded Lives: Political Economies of School Exclusion and its Consequences' through the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Ian is a prolific publisher in the fields of school inclusion and exclusion, cultural historical research, social justice education, adolescent mental health, and initial teacher education.
