Dr. Ilana Snyder

Biography

Ilana Snyder is an Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Education, Monash University, with a specialization in English literacy education. Her research focuses on the socio-cultural changes associated with the use of digital media in everyday life, particularly in educational contexts. Professor Snyder has authored works addressing significant issues within critical digital literacy, exploring the rapidly changing literacy landscape influenced by digital technologies. She has conducted funded research through the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the National Council for Vocational Education Research (NCVER). Her contributions include books that have significantly impacted educators' and teacher educators' understanding of the changes in literacy practices due to digital technologies. Notable publications comprise 'Hypertext, Teachers, and Technoliteracy' (co-authored with Colin Lankshear and Bill Green) and 'The Literacy Wars,' which examines the contentious debates surrounding literacy education in Australia. Her edited volumes include 'Page to Screen,' 'Silicon Literacies,' and 'Literacy Online' (co-edited with Catherine Beavis). Ilana's work has been translated into Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese, and aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals established in 2015, promoting global literacy and education.
