Biography

I teach live online writing courses at Queen’s University and the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I also tutor at the RMC Writing Centre and teach courses for the State University of New York and the University of Maryland, as well as working recently with Professors Without Borders. My doctoral work focused on gender studies, composition, rhetoric, and distance education. My primary interests are in helping novice writers develop their emerging voices in multiple discourse communities, bridging the gap between academic and non-academic lives. I find it rewarding to spend time chatting with students about their writing, assisting them in deciding their approaches to writing tasks, and helping them find moments of insight and discovery in effectively using language. My teaching philosophy is based on the premise that everyone can improve with time and effort. I strive to create an environment where academic writing becomes less mystifying for first-year students. I teach strategies and skills to help students grow and flourish in their self-definition and personal awareness within learning communities. Dialogue is a key element of my classes, whether I am teaching a business writing course or a literature class, as I believe that learning involves an ongoing, dynamic, mutual exchange of knowledge within learning communities. I take pride in my ability to interact with students and encourage their participation and reflection on their writing assignments.
