Dr. Ingrid Chiang

Biography

Ingrid Chiang is a celebrated bassoonist and educator based in Vancouver, Canada. For the past 25 years, she has served as the Principal Bassoonist of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra for 18 seasons and is a core artist with the Turning Point Ensemble, bringing artistry to both classical repertoire and contemporary premieres. Originally from Taiwan, Ingrid moved to Vancouver at the age of 15, continuing a musical journey that began with piano at age five and then transitioning to bassoon at twelve. She studied under Jesse Read at the University of British Columbia and Christopher Millard at the Vancouver Academy of Music, cultivating a strong foundation in technical mastery and interpretive depth. Ingrid’s performances have featured leading ensembles such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Victoria Symphony, and the Malaysia Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as numerous chamber and contemporary music festivals. A past national winner of the CBC Radio Competition, she has been highlighted in the Young Concert Artists Series for her exceptional skill as a soloist. Known for her compassionate and insightful approach to teaching, Ingrid has been on the faculty at the University of British Columbia for 12 years, fostering growth and personal connections with her students. Offstage, Ingrid is a breast cancer survivor, and her recovery journey has deepened her advocacy for wellness and resilience in the performing arts. She integrates movement, mindfulness, and joy into her artistry and mentorship, championing a holistic path for musicians.
