J’May Bertrand Rivara is an Associate Teaching Professor Emerita at the University of Washington's School of Social Work. She began her career in 1985 as a lecturer and worked as associate director of Social Work at UW Medical Center. In 1995, she joined the Office of Field Education full-time, where she was promoted to senior lecturer in 2017 and became an associate teaching professor in 2019. Rivara has taught Health Care Practice courses at the School of Social Work and co-directed the Carol LaMare Scholars Program, which supports students in advanced practicums in oncology and palliative care. She has a longstanding commitment to clinical social work, having worked in various health care settings across multiple states including Massachusetts, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Washington. Additionally, she served as a practicum instructor at the University of Kentucky and the University of Tennessee. Her teaching and research interests focus on family functioning, chronic illness, and pediatric traumatic brain injury. Rivara was also involved as a co-investigator in the Children’s Head Injury Outcome Study at Seattle Children’s Hospital and coordinated training grants for behavioral health pedagogies. She has contributed significantly to interprofessional education within health sciences and served as faculty advisor for concurrent MSW/MPH students at the UW School of Public Health.
