Biography

J. Christopher Roberts is currently the Chair of Music Education at the University of Washington, where he also serves as a Lecturer and Director of Music Teacher Preparation. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Education (2012), an M.A. in Music Education (2007), and a B.M. in Music Education from the University of Washington, as well as a B.A. in History from Swarthmore College (1991). With over 20 years of experience as an elementary music teacher, Roberts focuses on professional development in the United States, particularly in areas such as World Music Pedagogy and culturally responsive pedagogy. His research interests include children's musical cultures, world music pedagogy, and fostering children's interest in music. He has authored articles for respected publications such as the Journal of Research in Music Education and the British Journal of Music Education. In 2018, he co-authored the book 'World Music Pedagogy II: Elementary Music Education' published by Routledge. Additionally, Roberts directs the Kodály Levels Program in Seattle and teaches Kodály Levels at Westminster Choir College in New Jersey. He also serves as a founding instructor for the Smithsonian Folkways Certification Course in World Music Pedagogy.
