Biography

Jahi Johnson-Chappell is a scholar and organizer with a diverse background in social work and sustainable agriculture. He served as the Executive Director of the Southeastern African American Farmers Organic Network (SAAFON) from 2020 to 2022, focusing on supporting Black sustainable farmers across the Southeastern United States. Jahi's academic credentials include a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Michigan. Over the past two decades, he has advocated for participatory and socially ecologically sustainable agrifood systems, promoting the voices of farmers, laborers, and communities. His professional experience includes positions as an Associate Professor of Agroecology at Coventry University in the UK, and as an Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Justice at Washington State University, Vancouver. Jahi has authored a book titled "Beginning the End of Hunger: Food Environment in Belo Horizonte, Brazil," published by the University of California Press in 2018, and received the Gerald L. Young Book Award from the Society of Human Ecology. Additionally, he has contributed to works on agroecology and food systems and holds leadership roles in various nonprofit and academic organizations.
