Dr. James Patton

Biography

James R. Patton is a professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Texas at Austin and an independent consultant. He instructs students with special needs across elementary, secondary, and postsecondary levels in both public and private settings. Previously, he served on the faculty at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His primary professional focus includes transition assessment planning, differentiating instruction for students with special needs within inclusive settings, and developing study skills tailored for college students facing learning-related challenges. Additionally, he addresses issues that individuals with disabilities encounter within the criminal justice system, serving as a forensics specialist in high-profile death penalty cases. Patton, who grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, earned his B.S. from the University of Notre Dame and holds both an M.Ed. and an Ed.D. from the University of Virginia. He emphasizes enhancing the participation of adults with disabilities in higher education and exploring factors influencing their interactions with the criminal justice system. Patton is a member of various esteemed organizations, including the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and the Council for Exceptional Children.
