Dr. James Patton

Biography

James R. Patton is a professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Texas at Austin. With a career spanning various educational levels, he has focused on teaching students with special needs in both public and private settings. He previously held a faculty position at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His primary research interests include transition assessment and planning, differentiated instruction for students with disabilities, and instructional strategies for college students facing learning-related challenges. He actively collaborates with professionals globally, providing expertise as a forensics specialist in cases involving individuals with intellectual disabilities and the criminal justice system. Patton's educational background includes a B.S. from the University of Notre Dame and both an M.Ed. and Ed.D. from the University of Virginia. He has been recognized for his contributions to the field, receiving numerous awards including the Outstanding Advisor and the Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Texas at Austin. He is an active member of various professional organizations, including the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and the Council for Exceptional Children.
