James began his nursing career in Shropshire in 1997 and qualified as a Registered Nurse (Adult) in 2000, working in a peri-operative environment and completing rotations in General Surgery, Vascular, Trauma Orthopaedic, Elective Orthopaedic, ENT, Urology, and Plastics. After completing a clinical nursing degree, James was able to work in Anaesthetics, Scrub, and Recovery across a range of specialties, including obstetrics. By 2003, he became Charge Nurse in the Trust Theatre Education Department at Walsall Hospitals NHS Trust. In this role, James transitioned into Higher Education as a Lecturer in Nursing, becoming a Senior Lecturer in 2005, during which time he developed expertise in clinical skills, digital pedagogy, course development, and module leadership roles. In 2015, James was appointed Principal Lecturer in Multimedia Laboratory Learning and took on a CQC Registered Manager role. In 2018, he moved to a central university position leading an Advance fellowship focused on digital pedagogy and learning space design. By 2021, he became an Associate Professor and Head of the Division of Adult Nursing at Leicester, also serving as Principal Lecturer in Adult Nursing and Head of Skills Simulation-based Education. During the COVID-19 pandemic, James worked as an ITU Clinical Reservist Band 8a Nurse Charge at a large NHS Foundation Trust. As Associate Dean of Undergraduate Pre-registration Education, he supports the design of inclusive educational experiences and emphasizes innovative learning and assessment strategies. James is a Research Student at the Institute of Education, University College London, studying for an EdD under the supervision of Prof. Mary Richardson, focusing on digital simulation pedagogy in nursing education. He has significant consultancy experience and has represented King's in post-digital course design in Nanjing, China, while also developing perioperative resources in partnership with organizations in Mumbai.
