Biography

Jamie Hillman is a Canadian American musician and an active conductor, singer, pianist, music educator, and composer-arranger. He holds the endowed Elmer Iseler Chair in Conducting at the University of Toronto and is the Director of Choral Studies, as well as an Associate Professor. Hillman conducts the U of T MacMillan Singers and leads master's and doctoral degree programs in Choral Conducting. He is recognized for his excellence in teaching, having received the Faculty of Music's Teaching Award in 2024. Hillman has served on the faculties of several prestigious institutions, including Boston University and the Longy School of Music of Bard College. He is known for co-initiating a vocal music program in the Massachusetts prison system and has presented across Canada, the United States, and internationally. His impressive engagements include conducting at Carnegie Hall and major festivals, as well as workshops at renowned universities. A professional choral singer himself, he has performed with various esteemed choirs and has a rich background in choral music publishing, participating as a curator and editor for several music series and educational materials. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University and has been recognized for his contributions to music education and choral pedagogy.
