Biography

Jane Griffiths is an Associate Professor and Tutorial Fellow at Wadham College, Oxford. Her primary research focuses on English poetry and drama from the 15th and 16th centuries, with a particular interest in voice, composition processes, and literary authority. She has published works such as 'John Skelton and Poetic Authority: Defining Liberty to Speak' (OUP, 2006) and 'Diverting Authorities: Experimental Glossing Practices from Manuscript to Print' (OUP, 2015). Additionally, she co-edited 'Architectural Space and the Imagination: The Houses of Literature and Art from Classical to Contemporary' (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020) with Adam Hanna, reflecting her ongoing interests in memory, the arts, and representations of architectural space in literature. Griffiths is also an accomplished poet, having published six collections, including 'Silver' (2022) and 'Country' (2008), the latter of which was shortlisted for the Forward Prize. Her current research explores verbal memory and the creative process, culminating in her monograph titled 'Material Medium: Untranslatability in the Poetic Process', which examines the nature of language in late-medieval poetry. Furthermore, she is engaged in writing a work of creative non-fiction that responds to the themes of silencing and linguistic displacement experienced in bilingualism.
