Dr. Janet Currie

Biography

Janet Currie is the Henry Putnam Professor of Economics and Public Affairs, Emeritus, at Princeton University. She co-directs the Program on Families and Children at the National Bureau of Economic Research. A pioneer in economic analysis of child development, her current research focuses on socioeconomic differences in health, access to healthcare, and the environmental threats to health. Additionally, she investigates the important role of mental health and the long-run impact of health issues arising during pregnancy and early childhood. Currie holds honorary degrees from the University of Lyon and the University of Zurich. She is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Currie has served as the President of the American Economic Association in 2024 and previously held the same position in the American Society of Health Economics and the Society of Labor Economics. A distinguished CES Fellow in 2023, she was also a Fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science and the Econometric Society. Currie received the NOMIS Distinguished Scientist Award in 2019 and the Klaus J. Jacobs Research Prize in 2023. She was named one of the top 10 women in economics by the World Economic Forum in July 2015. Furthermore, Currie has served on the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science and has been the Editor of the Journal of Economic Literature, along with editorial board positions for various journals. She has published four books and over 200 articles, presenting her work at universities worldwide and venues such as the White House and the European Investment Bank.
