Biography

Janice N Furlong is an Emeritus Clinical Professor at Boston University School of Social Work. With a Master of Social Work from Simmons College and a Bachelor's degree from Duke University, she has over 40 years of clinical practice experience. Her scholarly interests encompass social work teaching effectiveness, development evaluation, learner-centered teaching methods, interprofessional collaboration, narrative therapy, gender bias in clinical practice, and clinical supervision. Furlong has been recognized as a gifted teacher, receiving the BUSSW’s Teaching Excellence Award four times and in 2015, she was awarded Boston University’s highest teaching honor, the Metcalf Cup Prize for Excellence in Teaching. In 2019, she presented on “Teaching Through Feedback: Learner-Centered, Process Oriented Approach” at the Council on Social Work Education Teaching Institute. She is also a collaborator on a Health Resources Service Administration grant focused on training for interprofessional primary care in urban underserved communities. Additionally, Furlong has co-authored articles on topics such as interprofessional education in clinical settings and innovative pedagogical methods for teaching social work students about substance use disorders.
