Biography

Jasḵwaan Bedard is a Haida language educator and advocate from G̱aw Tlagée (Massett), Haida Gwaii. His research focuses on providing pathways for Indigenous communities to strengthen their Indigenous languages. Bedard's dissertation, "X̱aad Kíhlga Tl'a Gúusuugiigangsaang: Haida Research Framework for Learning X̱aad Kíl," aims to provide a pathway for specialized Massett Haida language immersion guided by Haida community laws and values. Since 2007, he has contributed to Haida language programming and taught multi-level language classes to community learners up until 2015. His work includes translation and transcription for X̱aad Kíl resources along with curriculum development. In 2017, Bedard taught at the Haida Gwaii Institute through the UBC Department of Forestry, offering courses on Indigenous Perspectives on History and Language Cultural Continuity.
