Dr. Jay Gottfried

Biography

Jay Gottfried is the Arthur H. Rubenstein University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in Psychology. His research centers on the neurobiology of the human sense of smell, employing methods such as functional MRI (fMRI) and intracranial EEG to explore odor perception within the human brain. His work has developed a complementary research platform utilizing epilepsy patients to gain finer physiological insights into human olfaction. Aiming to uncover the mechanisms of information processing across limbic circuits and networks related to emotions, perception, learning, and memory, he investigates the anatomy and physiology of the olfactory epithelium and bulb. His latest initiatives include developing behavioral paradigms in rodents, adopting an 'inverse translational' approach to gain mechanistic insights into the human olfactory system. Furthermore, he seeks potential correlations between neurodegenerative disorders that impair the sense of smell and the emergence of overt symptoms.
