Biography

Jay Hornack is a partner at the firm Healey & Hornack, concentrating on employee rights and benefits in his private law practice. He specializes in representing employees in claims involving workers' compensation, Social Security disability benefits, unemployment compensation, employment discrimination, wrongful discharge, and pension benefits. Hornack graduated from Rutgers-Newark School of Law in 1981, where he received the J. Skelley Wright Prize for his contributions to civil rights and civil liberties. He earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Miami University in 1978. Hornack is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and the National Organization of Social Security Claimant Representatives. He has served as a referral attorney for the American Association of University Women Legal Advocacy Fund and Lambda Legal, and has held a position on the Board of Directors for the Disability Rights Network of Pennsylvania, chairing the organization’s Legal Committee. In 1983, he was appointed Special Counsel by the Pittsburgh City Council to defend the plant closing notification ordinance. He also served as Solicitor for the Steel Valley Authority, working with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry's Strategic Early Warning Network to retain existing industries and develop new ones in Western and Central Pennsylvania. In addition, Hornack has served as a hearing officer for the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. He has taught evening courses at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Penn State University, and currently serves as an adjunct professor of business law and ethics at Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business, as well as an adjunct professor of disability discrimination law at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Law.
