Dr. Jean Benoit Falisse

Biography

Jean-Benoit Falisse is a Senior Lecturer in African Studies and International Development at the University of Edinburgh. He co-directs the Centre of African Studies and has a significant background in development studies, economics, and political science. Falisse's research primarily focuses on the empirical consequences of idea repair, particularly in the context of reparation programs for victims of atrocity crimes. He is actively engaged in exploring the access to basic social services, such as healthcare, education, and justice, in fragile environments. His work addresses the livelihoods of displaced people and the political economy of healthcare, with regional expertise in the African Great Lakes region, particularly Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He employs a variety of research methods, including interviews, survey data, archival research, and experiments. Prior to his academic career, Falisse worked with the United Nations and international NGOs in the African Great Lakes region, providing capacity building and advisory support.
