Jeffrey J. Lockman conducts research on the interface of cognitive and motor development. His work focuses on understanding how thinking is embodied in action for infants, children, and adults. Through the use of state-of-the-art technology such as eye tracking and motor tracking video data, he aims to explore how infants learn about the properties of objects, as well as how young children and adults learn to use everyday tools within their culture, such as chopsticks, hammers, and writing instruments. Additionally, he conducts research on how infants and toddlers begin to develop a concept of self, as reflected in their actions. Dr. Lockman has served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Child Development and is currently an Editor for Advances in Child Development and Behavior. He is also a co-editor of the Cambridge Handbook of Infant Development. His research is supported by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the James S. McDonnell Foundation.
