Dr. Jeffrey Lyman

Biography

Jeffrey Lyman is a distinguished professor and bassoonist at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, where he has established himself as a premier performer and educator since 2006. Previously, he has held teaching positions at Arizona State University and Bowling Green State University. Lyman studied under prominent musicians including Bernard Garfield of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Richard Beene, and Hugh Cooper. He holds an undergraduate degree from Temple University, as well as a Master’s and Doctorate from the University of Michigan. Lyman has performed with numerous orchestras across the United States, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He is known for his contributions to bassoon pedagogy, regularly hosting masterclasses and recitals at notable institutions such as McGill University and the Curtis Institute. Starting in summer 2025, he will collaborate with colleagues at the University of North Texas for a Bassoon Intensive program. Lyman is also recognized for his advocacy of contemporary music and has released various editions of bassoon works from the 19th and 20th centuries. His YouTube channel showcases live performances and educational content related to bassoon playing, contributing significantly to bassoon education and community.
