Biography

Jennifer (Jen) Burney is a Professor of Global Environmental Policy in the Earth System Science department at the Doerr School of Sustainability, with a research focus on the interconnectedness of climate and food security. Her work involves measuring air pollutant emissions, quantifying the effects of climate and air pollution on land use and food systems, and understanding how food production and consumption contribute to climate change. Burney designs and evaluates strategies and technologies to help the world’s farmers adapt to and mitigate climate change impacts. Her research group leverages methods from physics, ecology, statistics, remote sensing, economics, and policy to address critical scientific uncertainties in these coupled systems. She earned her PhD in Physics in 2007 and has postdoctoral experience in food security and climate science. Burney was named a National Geographic Emerging Explorer in 2011 and previously served as faculty at UC San Diego's School of Global Policy and Strategy and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
