Biography

Jeremy Stoddard is a Professor in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a researcher at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research. His research focuses on the teaching of civics and history in partisan contexts, the integration of media education, and democratic education, with a particular emphasis on engagement with marginalized histories and contemporary controversial issues. He has numerous publications, including co-authored and co-edited books such as 'Teaching Difficult History Through Film' (Routledge, 2017). Stoddard has led various curriculum development and evaluation projects in both formal and informal education settings, including a current Institute of Education Sciences-funded project called PurpleState. In addition to his research and publications, he has served in significant service roles such as the Editor for the Theory & Research in Social Education and leadership positions in the Teaching History Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association and the National Council for Social Studies. Before joining UW-Madison faculty in 2019, he was on faculty at the College of William & Mary, where he served as Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, founded and directed the interdisciplinary program in Educational Studies, and was affiliated with the Film and Media Studies program.
