Biography

Jess Macpherson is a Teaching Fellow at the University of Southampton. She is a part of the Evaluation team focusing on research culture activities. Her current research project, Birth Dance, seeks to increase the agency and wellbeing of birthing parents through dance practice and visual arts. The project addresses the challenges faced by new parents, particularly in relation to the crisis in maternity services in the UK. Leading midwifery academics have highlighted a trend towards the medicalization of maternity services, which can diminish the empowerment of birthing individuals. The Birth Dance project aims to deliver creative workshops for pregnant and post-partum individuals, exploring holistic birth positions and positive imagery. Jess has taught various undergraduate and postgraduate workshops, focusing on modules such as Choreography, Performance Art, and Body Conditioning for Dancers. She joined the University in 2023 after completing a practice-based PhD in Choreography at Bath Spa University and has worked as a freelance dance artist since 2012.
