Biography

Jieyu Zhou received her Ph.D. in Chinese Linguistics from the University of Washington, Seattle in 2025. Before joining Northwestern University, she taught Chinese language courses, including both heritage and non-heritage tracks, at the University of Washington and the Princeton Beijing summer immersion program. Recognized for her exceptional teaching abilities, she received the Distinguished Teaching Assistant Award from the University of Washington in 2021. Jieyu's research focuses on language acquisition, with a particular emphasis on how learners acquire challenging features of the Chinese language, especially among native English speakers. Her work aims to develop effective pedagogical approaches to enhance learner outcomes. Currently, she is involved in a project that examines how intermediate and advanced learners acquire formal collocations in Chinese (i.e., word combinations) with direct applications for classroom instruction. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Frontiers in Psychology and Applied Linguistics.
