Dr. Jim Cogswell

Biography

Jim Cogswell is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan, where he has taught since 1990. He holds an M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the University of New Mexico and a B.A. in English Literature from Rhodes College. Cogswell's work spans a variety of media and languages, focusing on the exploration of artistic practices that engage viewers through sequenced patterns and cognitive processes. His multidisciplinary approach includes collaborations with poets, dancers, musicians, and scientists, connecting art with disciplines like cosmology and biostatistics. Cogswell's notable projects include the immersive multimedia experience 'Jeweled Net Vast Invisible,' which integrates dark matter visualization, and installations that invite audience interaction. His work is represented in numerous public collections and has been exhibited widely across the United States and abroad. As a recognized educator, Cogswell has received multiple grants and awards for teaching excellence, and he has continually contributed to the vibrancy of the academic community within the University of Michigan.
