Biography

Jo is a Principal Lecturer in Medical Education and the Deputy Head of the Educational Development Unit at Imperial College London. She is based in the Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship (CHERS) and conducts faculty development workshops aimed at teaching Imperial College Medical Students. Jo supervises MEd students and PhD candidates, having previously acted as the Director of Postgraduate Studies for CHERS from 2018 to 2024. She is also the Deputy Director of the Medical Education Innovation Research Centre (MEdIC) in the School of Public Health, focusing on faculty development and professional identity development in medical education research. With extensive experience in educational consultancy both nationally and internationally, Jo has been awarded the President’s Medal for Teaching Innovation in June 2024. Before joining Imperial College, she led educational courses for the Royal College of Physicians and worked in further education as the head of a department. Jo holds a background in psychology and education, completing her Masters in Education and doctoral studies in medical education from King’s College London, where her research centered on the professional identity of clinical educators. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an accredited coach, with research interests including professional identity development in medical education, equity and inclusion in higher education, and the role of learning role models.
