Biography

Joanna Courtney is a Specialist Speech Language Therapist at CALL Scotland with over 18 years of experience in the field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). She developed her expertise while working at Capability Scotland’s Corseford School, where she had the opportunity to employ AAC devices to enhance communication opportunities for students with various communication difficulties. Joanna is dedicated to fostering communication skills and has an active interest in developing local peer groups for individuals who use AAC (People Who Use AAC). Since joining CALL Scotland in January 2009, she has been instrumental in collaborating with pupils and staff across the country to promote effective AAC use and to inform local services. Her particular focus also includes Early Years literacy, utilizing Shared Reading strategies to cultivate dialogic reading skills for children with communication support needs. Joanna holds a BSc in Speech Language Pathology and is committed to bridging the gap in communication through innovative practices.
