Biography

JoAnne Yates is the Sloan Distinguished Professor of Management at MIT Sloan School of Management. She is an expert in managerial communication and organizational studies, having developed MIT Sloan's Managerial Communication curriculum since 1980. She served as Deputy Dean of programs at MIT Sloan from 2007 to 2012. Her research spans historical and contemporary themes, including the importance of voluntary standard setting in the global economy, evidenced by her coauthored book 'Engineering Rules: Global Standard Setting 1880,' published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2019. Yates has also authored significant works such as 'Control Communication: The Rise of System American Management' and 'Structuring the Information Age: Life Insurance Technology in the Twentieth Century.' In her collaboration with Professor Wanda Orlikowski from MIT Sloan's Information Technology group, she investigates how communication technologies influence organizational behavior. Additionally, Yates is dedicated to improving the academic performance of underrepresented minority students and holds degrees from Texas Christian University and the University of North Carolina.
