Biography

Joseph Maurer is a Lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he teaches courses in ethnomusicology. He received his Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of Chicago in 2020 and holds a B.A. in Music, Public Policy, and Education from Brown University, obtained in 2010. His primary research interests include heritage music education in immigrant communities in Chicago, maritime music, and sea chantey revivalism, as well as the nonprofit arts education sector. Maurer's published work includes articles and reports on arts education and social-emotional learning, as well as contributions to various music encyclopedias focusing on global folk and sea chanty music. Outside of academia, he has experience working as a college access counselor for first-generation, low-income high school students in Providence and Boston. Maurer is also a performing musician with experience in various roles such as an accordionist, pianist, and mellophonist, and he is currently learning to play the tenor recorder.
