Biography

Joel Amernic is a Professor in the Department of Accounting at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, where he has been a faculty member since 1972. He began his full-time academic career in 1973. Throughout his career, Joel has served as an editor for Canadian Accounting Perspectives and has received the Canadian Academic Accounting Association’s Outstanding Educator Award. He has published extensively in numerous academic and professional refereed journals, including the Accounting Organizations Society, Critical Perspectives on Accounting, and the Auditing Accountability Journal, among others, and is the author or co-author of ten books. His primary research interests include accountability, language in corporate leadership (CEO-speak), financial reporting, management control, and management education. Currently, he is exploring the influence of artificial intelligence and large language models on CEO-speak and accounting education, with a special interest in CEO safety-speak.
