Biography

Johan Larsbrink is a Professor and Assistant Head of the Department of Life Sciences at Chalmers University. He joined the university in 2015 after obtaining his PhD from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in 2013. Following his doctoral studies, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Johan is a member of the Wallenberg Wood Science Center, a national multi-university center focused on creating novel materials from wood. He received the Research Supervisor of the Year Award from the Board of Graduate Students in 2019 and was elected as a member of the Young Academy of Sweden in 2021. Johan also directs studies at the Bioscience Graduate School at Chalmers. His research interests revolve around microbial deconstruction of complex biomass, particularly the carbohydrates that constitute a significant part of renewable plant biomass. His research group has received support from several funding agencies including the Swedish Research Council, Swedish Energy Agency, Formas, and Novo Nordisk Foundation. Johan teaches several courses, including Molecular Biotechnology, Biochemistry Biotechnology, a Project Course in Chemistry, and Sustainable Food Production.
