Biography

John McBride is a Professor of Engineering at the University of Southampton, where he has made significant contributions to the field of electro-mechanical engineering. Between 2009 and 2017, he served as the founder and CEO of the University of Southampton Malaysia, successfully establishing its international campus. From 2010 to 2012, he was the Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment, and since 2018 has headed the Mechatronics research group. Professor McBride is an expert in electrical contact physics and nanomaterials, with over 300 published papers and three patents to his name. He has been involved in over £8 million in research funding and has supervised the completion of 28 Ph.D. students. His leadership in various international conferences includes chairing sessions and serving on organizing committees. Notably, he received the IEEE Holm Scientific Achievement Award in 2006, recognizing his contributions to electric contacts technologies, and the James Lindner Prize in 2008 for his research on early sound recording technology. His work has also led to the establishment of spinout companies in optical metrology, including TaiCaan Technologies Ltd, a leader in optical surface metrology. Professor McBride has been actively involved in research that developed saliva sampling methods for COVID testing in collaboration with the NHS.
