Dr. John Michela

Biography

John (Jay) Michela is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology at the University of Waterloo. His research interests primarily focus on employee development, motivation, and performance, particularly the influence of variety in these domains. He works closely with graduate students to develop frameworks that enhance undergraduate professional competencies. His work includes studying the fit between individuals and their occupations, especially during early adulthood and in entrepreneurial careers. He has made significant contributions to the field, including the demonstration of non-linear multi-level modeling and advanced statistical methods in organizational contexts. Michela has received several grants aimed at promoting experiential learning and student team effectiveness. His published works include key books and numerous articles in recognized journals, covering topics such as organizational culture, managerial influence, and student evaluation processes. Michela has also held editorial positions and served as an associate editor for various academic journals. He is actively involved in training and curriculum development in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and has co-designed programs addressing emotional intelligence development.
